If you buy a short term car insurance policy using the above link you will not only enjoy fully comprehensive cover the driving the UK but you will also have third-party cover for driving throughout the countries of the EU as well. It's important to remember that, apart from when you are of course driving in the UK, this EU cover is not comprehensive as standard, and is limited to the absolute minimum necessary to comply with the laws of that European country that you are travelling through. It can usually, however, be upgraded to comprehensive cover in exchange for an extra premium and you will be given this option when you fill in the application form. You can also purchase European roadside assistance as well, if you wish.

Please bear in mind that having insurance is not the only obligation you have when you drive abroad throughout the EEC countries. For example, although the minimum age for driving in the UK is 17 it is 18 in Spain; and some countries will insist on you carrying such items as a breathalyser kit, warning triangle, high visibility jacket etc. You may also be expected to put a GB sticker on your car. There are other countries in Europe such as Switzerland, Monaco, Norway, San Marino etc which are not members of the EEC and you would need to make other arrangements for your insurance if you intended to pass through any of these countries. So, it is necessary to do your homework before you set off on your journey across Europe and make sure that you are fully aware of which countries you are passing through, and what their local rules are. Just as everywhere else in the world, ignorance of the law will be no defence.

Short-term European cover cannot be used for a car that you've picked up on the continent, or one that you are driving abroad and then leaving there; all journeys must both begin and end within the United Kingdom.
